A brief rundown of the Moon Loungers’ busy Christmas and New Years Eve…
Happy New Year everyone, we hope you had a good Christmas. Ours was incredibly busy, so here are a few highlights to keep you up to date!
20TH DEC – DRINKS RECEPTION AT CRIPPS BARN
We don’t play there very often (if we’re honest, it’s a bit far away and we’re not great travellers!), but whenever we go to Cripps Barn it’s always an enjoyable gig. First and foremost, check out this Ferrero Rocher pyramid:
On this occasion we were playing a drinks reception, and with the fire roaring and everyone getting into the Christmas spirit there was a really nice atmosphere in the barn. Naturally, we sprinkled our sets with a few festive songs for good measure…
21ST DEC – EVENING WEDDING BASH AT BEECHFIELD HOUSE
We’d only played at Beechfield House once before, our main memory from that occasion being the lady at the venue asking us to wait outside until we could access the room (it was raining so we sat in the van – thanks very much…).
On this occasion we wisely entered the place via the front door and were able to wait in the plush bar while the speeches finished.
From there on in it was a great night, with both sets going down really well and all the guests enjoying themselves.
There were even some fireworks during our break, which we succesfully remembered to keep a secret from everyone until the last minute!
23RD DEC – EVENING WEDDING PARTY AT THE GRANGE
The beauty of the Grange is it’s only a 5 minute drive for the Moon Loungers (rubbish travellers, as I already mentioned). On this particular night the short journey was particularly welcome given the awful weather – lots of road seemed to be flooded and trees were coming down all over the place…
The Grange is also a great place to play live, and this was another enjoyable gig that saw lots of guests up dancing.
We finished the second set with our final performance of “Merry Christmas Everyone” for the year, and then put the bride’s disco selection on to see things through to midnight. The songs that she and her bridesmaids had chosen sadly emptied the dance floor, however, and we were soon asked to put something better on! Is the customer always right? Sometimes we aren’t so sure…
28TH DEC – WEDDING EVENING GIG AT LIMPLEY STOKE HOTEL
This was a first visit to the Limpley Stoke Hotel, and on arrival we thanked our lucky stars it wasn’t icy given the worryingly steep driveway that leads up to the venue…
We set up while the meal was happening and then had a chance to relax before kicking off. With the busy festive period taking its toll we swapped our usual round of beers for a Lemsip each (Max Strength, naturally) to keep us going strong for the evening!
The Lemsips seemed to do the trick, because it was a cracking night from start to finish with everyone having a dance and getting into the spirit. Once the disco took over this picture shows the groom dancing on a chair, evidence indeed of a man 100% enjoying himself…
29TH DEC – CEREMONY AND DRINKS RECEPTION AT ASHTON COURT
No rest for the wicked! We then headed into Bristol and to Ashton Court for a ceremony and drinks combination.
The ceremony took place in the main room, and we tucked ourselves away at the back. After playing a few tunes as guests assembled, the bride entered to “Make You Feel My Love”. During the register there was time for another couple of songs and the exit music was “All You Need is Love”. All told, a very nice ceremony!
The drinks reception took place in the bar, and with the weather very cold there was never any danger of guests deserting us and heading outside… We played solidly throughout the drinks, barely having time to sip on our mulled wine. As everyone headed back into the main room for the wedding breakfast we received lots of compliments for our playing, rounding off another enjoyable wedding gig!
31ST Dec – NEW YEAR’S EVE AT CALCOTT MANOR
It was then time to finish off what has been a brilliant year with a New Year’s Eve performance at Calcott Manor near Tetbury. Here are Stu and Chris with Auld Land Syne lyrics and chords at the ready:
We were able to set up whilst guests were arriving for drinks, and then soundcheck as they enjoyed a slap up meal upstairs from us. The plan was to start playing around 10.00, but this somehow slipped to 11.00…the upshot was that we played straight through to just before 1pm, breaking for about 30 seconds before conducting the big countdown (before giving “Auld Lang Syne” the full Moon Loungers treatment, complete with marching band rhythm and 3-part harmony!).
And that was that, 2013 finished in style. Congratulations to all the brides and grooms we had the pleasure of playing for throughout the year, and well done to everyone who danced, sang and bought us drinks!
